STREAM
Mending the Avon - restoration and management to help wonderful wildlife
Demonstrating STrategic REstoration And Management (STREAM) is a £1 million four-year conservation project centred on the River Avon and the Avon Valley in Wiltshire and Hampshire. STREAM will address two key issues: the need for a strategic approach to large-scale river restoration, and the need to integrate the management of the river and valley. The STREAM project is supported financially by the European Commission's LIFE Nature programme.
Wessex Chalk Stream Project
The Wessex Chalk Streams Project acts as a 'one stop shop', working with riparian landowners and managers to promote wildlife-friendly river enhancement and management of the River Avon system Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Wiltshire, which includes the tributaries, Wylye, Nadder, Till, and Bourne. It also focuses on the River Ebble as well as associated wetlands and areas suitable for wetland restoration.
Harnhan Water Meadows Trust
The Harnham Water Meadows, within the city of Salisbury, are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA). They incorporate a surviving part of the irrigation system once widespread across the Wessex chalkland. The meadows are owned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral and the Harnham Water Meadows Trust.
The tasks of the Trust are to manage the meadows as a single entity and to restore and operate the historic irrigation structures, all consistent with the modern requirements of an SSSI.
Wessex Salmon and Rivers Trust
The WSRT is a charitable trust formed in 1992 by a volunteer group of like-minded individuals, anglers, owners, river managers, scientists and environmentalists all of whom viewed with dismay the rapid decline of lowland river salmon. The primary objectives of the trust are the advancement of education and research into the conservation and restoration of lowland river salmon populations, their habitat and the entire ecology.
The WSRT has developed and oversees a very successful programme that brings the wonders of the underwater world to the classroom. "Trout in Schools" is part of the Trust's educational programme aimed at introducing the vital role of the river in everyday life. The programme involves Brown Trout being reared in classroom fish tanks from eggs. This programme is set to expand with ongoing funding from Tesco Stores. The Living River has joined forces with WSRT to bring Trout in Schools to Salisbury Library and Langford Lakes Education Centre in 2008.
Hampshire Water Partnership
The 'Water in Hampshire' project was established in 1999. By forming a partnership of organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors, the project aims to raise the profile of water; gain a better understanding of the environmental, planning and management issues associated with the county' s water environment; and to develop sustainable solutions. The project takes a holistic look at water issues, focuses predominantly on the county' s freshwater resources, and appears to be the first of its kind in the UK.
Association of Rivers Trusts
The Association of Rivers Trusts is an umbrella organisation established to represent the rivers trust movement in England and Wales. It works to support its members, emerging community groups and encourage partnerships with Government bodies and others to promote practical and sustainable solutions to environmental issues. Has freshwater animations in the Education section of the website.
River Restoration Centre
The River Restoration Centre provides a focal point for the exchange of information and expertise relating to river restoration and enhancement in the UK. Their primary role is to disseminate information on river restoration and enhancement projects and to provide advice on site-specific technical issues through a network of experienced river restoration practitioners.
Riverfly Partnership
The Riverfly Partnership brings together anglers, conservationists, entomologists scientists, water course managers, and relevant authorities to increase our knowledge, expertise and experience of riverfly populations. As well as increasing the availability of this information the Partnership will address declines in riverfly populations, including declines in overall abundance and threats to individual species. The Partnership has developed a riverfly monitoring technique which is used by anglers across the country and now by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust River Monitors Scheme.
British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV)
With a philosophy of Inspiring People, Improving Places, BTCV works with people and communities to improve and protect the environment of their place Ð their street, neighbourhood, locality or region - wherever they live in the UK or overseas. The Living River is working closely with BTCV in 2008 to create wonderful places for wildlife on the River Avon in the Salisbury City centre
Dorset Countryside Service
Dorset Countryside is the Access and Ranger Service - working for the management and enjoyment of the countryside for all. It is supported by the Countryside Agency, North, West and Purbeck District Councils, Christchurch and Weymouth and Portland Borough Councils. We help to secure the sustainable use and management of our special countryside and provide facilities to promote its greater understanding, appreciation and enjoyment.
Blueprint for Water
The Government has made a commitment to meet the objectives of the Water Framework Directive, which says the ecology of our waters must be restored to health by 2015. The Blueprint sets out the steps needed to meet this target.
New Forest National Park
The New Forest National Park was created in March 2005 and the New Forest National Park Authority took up its full powers in April 2006. Its purposes are to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park, and promote opportunities for understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities. The National Park lies mainly in south-west Hampshire - from east of the Avon Valley to Southampton Water and from the Solent coast to the edge of the Wiltshire chalk downs.
