At home
Save water at home
Every time you turn on the tap, take a shower, use the washing machine or flush the toilet, that water has come from the River Avon (if you live in the River Avon catchment or Bournemouth). That's over 1.2 million people using on average 150 litres every day - 180 million litres a day from the river… 58 Olympic sized swimming pools.
And the wildlife in the river needs water too (that's why they live there) - so the more you use, the less there is for them.
Things you can do at home to help (and it really does make a difference, even if it only seems like a small amount to you - multiply it by 1.2 million…)
- Don't leave the tap running when you brush your teeth - only use it when you need to rinse.
- Use a watering can to water your garden, not the hose
- Use a bucket to wash your car, not the hose
- Get a hippo or other weight for your toilet cistern - they can save up to 3 litres a flush
